10/27/09 Choosing the Right Contractor

Choosing the right contractor is sometimes easier said than done, but here are a few tips to help you narrow your options!

•  Your contractor should be licensed, you can easily look up any Minnesota contractor at https://secure.doli.state.mn.us/licensing/licensing.aspx  And it will also tell you if there's been any enforcement actions (fines, revocations, etc) taken against them.

•  Check out their background, either with the BBB, or sometimes it's as simple as entering the contractor's company name into a search engine.

•  Ask for references from the company.  A reputable company shouldn't have any problem with this, and they should have a list of previous customers that will gladly share with you their experience with the company in question. Remember, if there are no referrals...it's probably not a good sign.

•  Also make sure the contractor has insurance, you want to make sure if something goes wrong, you don't end up being responsible for anything.

•  Find out how much experience the company has.  Check out their company name with the Secretary of State and you can find out the exact date they became registered as a business, here's the link http://da.sos.state.mn.us/minnesota/corp_inquiry-find.asp?:Norder_item_type_id=10

•  Be sure to get a few estimates, then DO NOT make the dreaded mistake of just picking the cheapest contractor- sometimes this works out, however the old saying "you get what you pay for" really applies when you have somebody remodeling or repairing your home.  However, nobody wants to get taken to the cleaners either, so weigh out all of the pro's and con's carefully and then decide what company you felt most comfortable with- after all hiring somebody to work on your home, most people's biggest investment, is a big deal.  Don't jump the gun!

•  Be sure when signing the contract, that everything is included, and that you won't get any surprise charges during your project.  Common things that should be included that can sometimes go overlooked include:  permit costs, material costs, labor costs, clean-up costs, etc.

•  Also don't pay much, if anything right away.   Ask to be invoiced if you will feel more comfortable, and never pre-pay for too much of the services you are contracting out.

•  Ask your friends and family for referrals.

10/05/09 Energy Efficiency… More Affordable Than

Ever!

If you haven’t seen or heard of the advertisements for the $1500.00 energy
efficiency tax credit or the new Project Re-Energize…then let us educate you!

The government is making it more affordable than ever to boost your home’s
energy efficiency. On February 17, President Obama signed into law the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009. This bill extends and
modifies the tax credits for windows, doors, and skylights established in the
Energy Policy Act of 2005. Qualifying products purchased between January 1,
2009 and December 31, 2010 are eligible for a tax credit equal to 30 percent
of the product cost. Installation is not included; but be sure to obtain an
itemized invoice from your retailer or installer. The maximum amount of
homeowner credit for all improvements combined (including roofing,
insulation, HVAC, and water heaters) is $1,500 during 2009 and 2010.

The other stimulus the government has available is the Project Re-Energize
Program. Project Re-Energize is an energy- efficiency rebate programdesigned
to improve your home’s energy efficiency, create jobs, and save you
MONEY! But be sure to act quickly because there’s a limited amount of money
allocated to the program- 2.5 million to be exact. And each qualified
contractor is given $12,000.00 to offer to their customers.

The maximum amount you may receive is $2500 for energy efficient upgrades
without attic air sealing, and $4000 with attic air sealing. The rebate may be
used with the tax credit, so you have the chance to save up to $4000.00!
However there are a few requirements with the rebate money- your home must
be less than 3000 square ft. and older than the year 2000.
If you’ve been looking to do some upgrades in your home…the time is now!
Call us today for a free consultation, we’d be glad to assist in your home
projects!
